Welcome to the redwoods! If you plan to walk/hike around the immediate property area, you're welcome to do so but please stay on the main road, as we've assured our neighbors that guests won't wander onto their property. (Our property sits on 10 private acres where guests are welcome to walk freely. We also adjoin a separate 200,000 acres of dense private forest land to the east. Property lines are unmarked and that area is off limits, so it's best for hikers and explorers to stick to the main road and watch for 'No Trespassing' or 'Private Property' signs).
We're a 30-40 minute drive to the world's amazing redwood groves, preserved in State and National parks. Depending on rain, you'll need the right gear (waterproof boots, weatherproof jackets, ponchos, hats, umbrellas, hiking poles) but definitely get out there and explore!
1- Redwood National and State Parks
2- Humboldt Redwoods State Park
3- Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park
4- Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park
Here are some of the best hikes around! (And to bring a lunch, Central Sandwich in McKinleyville (open 10:30-5:30) makes great subs to go! So does Murphy's Market in Trinidad (open 7am-10pm), en route to the parks to the north)...
{1} Lady Bird Johnson Grove in Orick (super easy, flat trail loop with amazing old-growth trees); drive a few miles past it to Elk Meadow to see the grazing herds of wild elk, then come back and do the LBJ trail; EdeBee's Snack Shack in Orick is good for elk burgers and loaded tots.
{2} Trilium Falls, easy/moderate loop hike with a picturesque waterfall; some hike just to that, then head back (it's about 1/4 mile in). Picnic tables onsite, so bring a lunch!
{3} Fern Canyon is one of the most beautiful around, also a flat/easy all-ages trail, but parts of the trail could be washed out depending on rainfall.
{4} Tall Trees Grove, so named because it contains the world's tallest tree (Hyperion). Effective March, 2022 the National Park Service has closed access to Hyperion. Violators could face a $150 onsite ticket, 6 months jail time, and a $5,000 fine. Please do not attempt to go. It's visible from a scenic overlook the Ranger can direct you to from the park entrance.
{5} High Bluff Overlook, with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Bring a picnic and listen to the waves crashing below you while enjoying an easy, short, all-ages trail.
THE TREES:
*Famous Redwoods - Great site highlighting world's tallest, largest, & fastest-growing. Find them!
*Visit Redwoods - A great resource for the area's several National and State Parks.
*All Trails - Terrific, peer-reviewed and rated hike and trail guide. Search by name, town, or area.
For picturesque/scenic drives with tons of turnouts to pull off and hike into the trees, check out:
(A) Avenue of the Giants (coming from the south), and/or (B) Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway (coming from the north). A day-trip out to either/both is a great outing, especially if it's raining. Those routes both parallel the 101 freeway with easy on/off access, and contain the most majestic redwood scenery in the world. They're the reason people come here! Other nice day-trips in the car include visits to:
--Ferndale, CA: A picturesque Victorian village immaculately preserved and charming to explore. (Also known for being the hometown of Guy Fieri of Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives!)
--Bald Hills Rd. Scenic Drive: Half day loop (bring a picnic!) and head east to Willow Creek, then north to Weitchpec, west toward Orick, returning south back to Fieldbrook. Breathtaking views!
--Shelter Cove: Plan a whole day to drive The Mattole & see the Lost Coast's most remote spot.
--For more, check out this list of the most scenic drives in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties.
The beaches here are generally NOT safe for swimming or surfing. Cold water, rip tides, sharks, and rogue waves are common. The north coast beaches are picturesque, and it's serene to walk along the shore..you'll probably be the only ones there. Please just be very water-aware! Local grocers sell firewood bundles that are fun for beach bonfires. Remember, no fires are permitted on the cabin property!
*Moonstone Beach - sure to become your favorite beach in the world. (Look for the cave!)
*Agate Beach at Patrick's Point - collect some famous California Agates!
*Clam Beach - great spot for collecting driftwood and sea glass, or riding horses on the beach.
*Luffenholtz Beach - Surrounded by beautiful lagoons (part of Humboldt Lagoons State Parks).
*Houda Point and Camel Rock Lookout - Amazing sunsets!
FOSSIL HUNTING: Check out this great resource!
Have the proper tools with you (hand trowel, compass, camera, rock hammer, ruler, protective eyewear, work gloves, plastic bags, pencil, marker, boots, sunscreen and a head covering). Best spots to scope them out include:
1) Scotia Bluffs: From Arcata, South on Hwy. 101, take the Scotia exit. (exit 679) Scotia Bluffs features a roughly 2-mile section along abandoned railroad tracks of sedimentary layer composed of sandstone with some mudstone. Mollusks and sand dollars are often found, along with some plants, turtles, starfish and whale bone.
2) Centerville Beach: From Arcata, South on Hwy. 101, take the Ferndale exit. (exit 692) As you walk south along the beach, past the gold-colored sandstone, a grey layer of mud begins to appear. Fossils of scallops, cockles, snails, and clams can be found.
3) Moonstone Beach/Pilot Point: From Arcata, North on Hwy. 101, take the Westhaven exit. Layers of sandstone and coquina formed during the Pleistocene Epoch 700,000 years ago are home to gastropods, mollusks, sand dollars, barnacles, sand dollars, clam and mussel shells and barnacles – you might even find seal teeth!
4) Patrick’s Point State Park: From Arcata, North on Hwy. 101, take the Trinidad exit. Living invertebrates can be seen in the tide pools at Palmer’s Point and Agate Beach. or look for agates at the latter. Clear or nearly clear agates can also be seen if you look against the light.
5) Elk Head: From Arcata, North on Hwy. 101, take the Trinidad exit. Around 500,000 years ago (Pleistocene Epoch), this area was an intertidal zone with tidepools and serge channels. What you will find are “trace fossils”, which are hundreds of holes made by pholads or boring clams, along with mussels, dogwinkles and worm tubes.

There is a fantastic book to read during your stay called "Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast" which is a great resource to peruse. The mushroom field season is relatively short – prime months are September through December, then again roughly February-March. The Humboldt Bay Mycological Society has regular guided field trips in the 2,200 acre conservation laboratory, Van Eck Forest, which is very near to the property. The forest is owned by the Fred M. Van Eck Forest Foundation via a grant to Purdue University, and it's managed by the Pacific Forest Trust. The Humboldt Bay Mycological Society has ongoing authorized use of the site to compile data on the fungi found there. Common edible mushrooms found here are chanterelles (various types), oyster, lion's mane, and hedgehog mushrooms. The site is not marked (to prevent excessive poaching), but it's located on Murray Rd about 1.3 miles northeast of Central Ave. On the side of the road at this location will be a set of white plastic electrical boxes. There's a dirt turnout exactly across Murray Rd. at this spot, with an unpainted metal gate. This is the entrance to the mushroom foraging paths. (Note: There's another turnout area just east of here, on the righthand side, marked with gold Sheriff Dept. stars on white signs. Do Not Go Into That Area! It's used for K-9 training, and has strictly enforced No Trespassing signs). During your foray into the Van Eck conservation forest, please be sustainable with your mushroom hunting. This means only dig up max. 3 of the same species at varying stages of development (young, mature, etc.). Don’t pick old mushrooms; leave them to drop their spores. Even better, just take pictures. Since you are responsible for obtaining appropriate permissions for entry and not getting lost, stay on paths, within sight and sound of others/the road, and use the buddy system of at least 2 people.
Great fishing and watersports abound in this area which is so fortunate to have 6 amazing rivers, and at least 3 lakes, in proximate distance to the property. Before undertaking any fishing activity, be sure to have a valid, unexpired California Fishing License and Fish Harvest Report Card (which can both be obtained online, here or in-person at Sportsman's Warehouse in Eureka, which also has a great real-time Fish Report on what's biting). The area is heavily patrolled by the Department of Fish and Wildlife, who also monitor for conservation and environmental protection efforts. We have herds of wild elk and deer that use the game paths through the property. Hunting is expressly NOT PERMITTED on our private property or anywhere adjacent.
Our rivers are known for freshwater fishing and abound with salmon (chinook, coho, king and silver), trout (steelhead and cutthroat), shad and sturgeon. Our lagoons vary between brackish and fresh, and include black bass, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Our wild oceans, piers and jetties are plentiful for saltwater and sport fishing with crab, lingcod, rockfish, cabezon, halibut, ocean salmon, black snapper, rock cod, tuna, clam and abalone.

*Star Wars: Return of the Jedi (1983) - The Endor scenes were filmed in the Tall Trees Redwood Grove located in the nearby Redwood National & State Park, and Luke Skywalker’s famous speeder chase was filmed along the Chetham Grove path in Grizzly Creek Redwoods State Park.
*E.T. (1982) - The redwood forest scenes were filmed in nearby Crescent City.
*Jurassic Park: The Lost World (1997) - Wedding Rock in Patrick’s Point State Park and Fern Canyon in Prairie Creek State Park appear as the rain forests of Isla Sorna.
*Bird Box (2018) - Partially shot on the Smith River.
*Last of the Mohicans, A Wrinkle In Time, The Gnome Mobile...find them all!
*The Arcata-Eureka Airport (ACV) is a mere 15 minutes from the Fieldbrook properties and 1 minute from the Coastal Sauna. United Airlines has several direct flights daily to/from LAX, San Francisco and Denver. Avelo Air also has direct flights to/from the Hollywood/Burbank Airport (BUR).
*Nearest major airport is San Francisco (SFO), about a 4.5 hour drive from the south..and one of the most scenically picturesque drives in the country. Don't miss Avenue of the Giants on your way!
*The airport in Medford, OR (MFR) is about a 3.5 hour drive from the north (also a beautiful trip). Offering 9 direct flights daily from Seattle, Portland, Salt Lake City, Denver, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Mesa, L.A., and San Francisco, it's serviced by Alaska, Allegiant, American, Avelo, Delta, & United airlines.
Local Transportation:
It's essential to have your own vehicle to explore the area. Rideshare services like Uber/Lyft are rare to non-existent here, and cellular service is spotty so you may find yourself stranded if you planned to hail a cab without advanced reservations, or a firm plan to get back from where it dropped you off. Hertz and National have rental car counters inside the ACV airport, and Enterprise has a shuttle with car lots in Arcata and Eureka. Here are some other local transportation options:
--Airport Shuttle: If you just want to head to the property and stay there to veg (many arrive & never leave!), the Door To Door Airporter Shuttle is great: (707) 839-4186.
--Taxi Cabs: Schedule them in advance, have them wait for you, and arrange for return pickups. Popular companies include Plaza Cab at (707) 822-4742, and Cab Louie at (707) 599-3391 (both in Arcata), or City Cab based in Eureka at (707) 442-4551.
--Bus Service: Greyhound is a long-haul provider so you can't hop on/hop off around town. There's a reliable local bus system through the Humboldt Transit Authority. Check routes and times and purchase fares online.
--Amtrak: It's possible to have Amtrak transport you to/from Eureka with "mixed service" Amtrak Thruway service connecting you from train to bus in Martinez, CA. You'll still need a car once you get here though.
